C. A. Kincaid worked in British India as a civil servant and writer who translated stories from western India. Deccan Nursery Tales gathers stories and carries the subtitle Fairy Tales from the South in editions. Project Gutenberg identifies Charles Augustus Kincaid as author, Mahadev Visvanath Dhurandhar as illustrator, and Marathi as the source language. CiNii’s catalogue records Macmillan’s 1914 edition, the same illustrator, and the folklore subjects. Kincaid’s preface explains that the stories first appeared in the Times of India and that he translated them as literally as literary differences allowed. The volume includes gods, rulers, Brahmans, animals, households, tests of character, and comic reversals.
