C.J. Schüler

C.J. Schüler combines travel, cultural history, cartography, and the built environment in his work as an author and editor. Along the Amber Route follows the old trade corridor from St Petersburg to Venice across roughly 2,500 kilometres, combining present-day travel with three millennia of European history. Schüler’s official bibliography describes journeys by bus, train, boat, and on foot, while the National Library Board’s OverDrive record identifies Sandstone Press, the 2020 release, and the book’s history and travel subjects. Amber provides the route, but border changes, imperial contests, the former Iron Curtain, and the author’s family experience of persecution and flight give the journey its deeper structure. His earlier publishing and journalism work focused on Central and Eastern European culture, archaeology, maps, and heritage, all relevant to this layered itinerary. Readers of Along the Amber Route receive a travel narrative in which objects, roads, cities, memory, and geopolitics repeatedly illuminate one another.
