Caleb James
Caleb James is the fiction byline of psychiatrist and writer Charles Atkins, whose work joins young characters with supernatural pressures and difficult family responsibilities. Haffling, published in 2013 by Harmony Ink Press, introduces sixteen-year-old Alex Nevus, who protects his younger sister Alice while caring for their unwell mother. Alex’s discovery that his absent father belonged to the fey world gives the novel its central conflict and explains abilities he has never understood. The book opens the Haffling trilogy, followed by Exile and Hound, so its escape plot also establishes relationships that continue across the series. James has described Haffling as his first teenage novel after earlier fiction under the Charles Atkins name. His psychiatric career and volunteer teaching connection with Yale provide professional context for his interest in vulnerable families, although the story remains a paranormal adventure rather than a clinical case study. The result is a coming-of-age narrative shaped equally by loyalty, identity, and the dangers of an inherited world.
