Camryn Garrett

Camryn Garrett writes fiction for teenagers about Black characters navigating health, ambition, friendship, and queer identity with humor and emotional precision. Friday I’m in Love follows Mahalia Harris, a California student balancing work, college preparation, family finances, and her growing feelings for Siobhan. Instead of settling for a conventional birthday celebration, Mahalia plans an elaborate coming-out party inspired by music, color, and community, even as every expense tests what she can afford. Alfred A. Knopf issued the novel in 2023, after Garrett's Full Disclosure and Off the Record established her interest in teenagers confronting public judgment. The story treats joy as something Mahalia deliberately organizes rather than passively receives. Jade Wheeler narrates the Listening Library audio edition, distinguishing Mahalia's family and friends while following her uncertainties and determination. Garrett connects romance to a broader question: who gets to celebrate openly, and what support makes that celebration possible?
