Candi Miller developed her fiction from sustained engagement with the Ju|’hoan San and the history of southern Africa. Salt & Honey, published by Legend Press in 2006, introduces Koba, a young girl whose life is shaped by survival, cultural contact, and the pressures surrounding her community in the Kalahari. Miller has described the novel as the result of research and field experience rather than a casual use of an unfamiliar setting. The later Kalahari Passage continues Koba’s story, making the first book the opening part of a connected narrative. Salt & Honey combines historical and coming-of-age fiction, while Miller emphasizes the responsibility involved in representing Ju|’hoan life. Her prose links individual development with environmental knowledge and changing social conditions. The novel established the central character and cultural setting that her sequel revisited, giving it a defined position in her small but closely related body of Kalahari fiction.
