Carl Phillips is an American poet, essayist, translator, and teacher whose work joins classical learning to questions of desire, power, memory, and moral uncertainty. Silverchest, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2013, is his twelfth poetry collection. Its poems use compressed syntax and shifting clauses to examine attachment, risk, nostalgia, and the vulnerability that accompanies trust. The collection continued a body of work shaped by Phillips's training in Greek and Latin as well as his later study of creative writing. Before and after Silverchest, he has returned to mythology and history without treating them as decorative references; they become ways to test contemporary choices and emotional contradictions. The book earned a place on the 2014 Griffin Poetry Prize shortlist, while later collection Then the War received the Pulitzer Prize. Phillips's poems often resist a single conclusion, allowing thought to revise itself line by line until uncertainty becomes the poem's most honest form of knowledge.
