Carleton Wolsey Washburne became a leading American educator and reformer closely associated with the Winnetka Plan of individualized instruction. As superintendent of schools in Winnetka, Illinois, from 1919 to 1943, he combined self-paced work in core subjects with creative group activities, teacher development, and attention to children's differing needs. The Story Of The Earth (1916), written with Heluiz Chandler Washburne, introduced earth science for younger readers before his best-known administrative work. The Crisis in Public Education in Illinois, published in 1921, lists Washburne as editor and belongs to his sustained engagement with school policy. His later books explained progressive education to both specialists and families, while the schools under his direction became widely observed models. Washburne also helped reopen educational institutions in Italy after the Second World War, then served at Brooklyn College and Michigan State University. His writing and public leadership shared a consistent purpose: adapting institutions and materials to the learner while preserving intellectual discipline and cooperative civic life.
