Catherine Hutton became known as a novelist, essayist, and prolific correspondent within Birmingham’s late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century literary culture. The daughter of historian William Hutton, she maintained friendships and correspondence with writers and intellectuals while building an archive of more than two thousand letters. The Miser Married, published in three volumes in 1813, was her first novel. Written largely through letters, it lets distinct fictional voices reveal courtship, money, family authority, and competing ideas of a suitable marriage. Hutton dedicated the work to her father, crediting his support for the leisure that made her writing possible. She later returned to epistolary fiction in The Welsh Mountaineer and Oakwood Hall, and also wrote journalism and historical work on English queens. The Miser Married stands at the beginning of that public career, but it already displays her characteristic interest in conversation, social judgment, and the gap between how people present themselves and what their letters gradually disclose.
