Catius Silius Italicus was a Roman poet, orator, and public official of the first century. He served as consul and later governed Asia, but his lasting literary reputation rests on the Punica, the longest surviving Latin epic. Caius Silius Italicus Punicorum Libri Septemdecim presents that poem in seventeen books, tracing Rome’s struggle with Carthage during the Second Punic War. Silius drew heavily on Livy’s historical narrative while shaping battles, speeches, divine interventions, and heroic episodes according to the conventions of epic poetry. The work gives Hannibal a commanding role and makes Roman endurance its central national theme. This Latin edition is associated with the nineteenth-century editor N. E. Lemaire, whose scholarly apparatus placed Silius within a classical series. Although later critics often compared him unfavourably with Virgil, modern readers value the poem for its reception of history and its preservation of Roman cultural memory.
