Author: W. Warde Fowler
William Warde Fowler (1847-1921) was an English classical historian who spent almost his entire career at Lincoln College, Oxford, elected fellow in 1872, tutor from 1873 to 1910, and sub-rector from 1881 to 1906. He became one of the leading English authorities on Roman religion, and his Roman Festivals of the Period of the Republic (1899) and Social Life at Rome in the Age of Cicero are still cited by scholars. Overcoming defects of sight and hearing, he was also a serious ornithologist, noted for his work on the life history of the marsh-warbler. He served as president of the Classical Association in 1920, the year before his death.
