Cees Nooteboom

Cees Nooteboom (1933-2026) was a Dutch novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. Rituals, first published as Rituelen in 1980, follows Inni Wintrop through three periods of Amsterdam life and his encounters with Arnold and Philip Taads. Its linked episodes examine time, order, chance, and the private systems people use to shape experience. The novel received the Ferdinand Bordewijk Prize and later the Pegasus Prize, which helped bring it to English-language readers. It was also adapted for film.
