Author: Chapin Howard M
Chapin Howard M, better known as Howard M. Chapin, was a Rhode Island historian and bibliographer attentive to documents and material culture. Cartography of Rhode Island, issued by Preston and Rounds in 1915, surveys the maps through which the colony and state were represented. In 1918, Report Upon the Burial Place of Roger Williams… examined historical evidence surrounding the founder's grave. The Seal, the Arms and the Flag of Rhode Island traces changes in the state's emblems and was issued by the Rhode Island Historical Society in 1913. Chapin's broader work covered almanacs, colonial heraldry, genealogy, and early records from Providence and Warwick. Across these subjects, he assembled printed testimony, images, and institutional holdings to test familiar accounts against surviving evidence. That cumulative method links the three featured works: maps, burial history, and civic symbols become routes into Rhode Island's changing understanding of its own past.
