Henry Gannett combined geography, statistics, and federal survey work to turn census returns and place names into usable national records. The U.S. Census Bureau credits him with geography for several censuses and with helping establish both the Board on Geographic Names and major geographic societies. A Gazetteer Of Porto Rico and The Forests Of Oregon organize regional knowledge, while Lists of Elevations Principally in That Portion of the United States West of the Mississippi River compiles survey measurements. Meteorological Observations During the Year 1872 records field data gathered with the Hayden Survey, and Results of Primary Triangulation presents geodetic work. In The Building of a Nation, Gannett brought statistics and geography together to describe the United States and consider its future.
