Author: Charlene Willing McManis

Charlene Willing McManis was of Umpqua heritage and enrolled in the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Indian No More draws on her family's tribal history to follow Regina Petit after federal termination policy forces her family to leave Oregon for Los Angeles in 1957. McManis wrote the autobiographical middle-grade novel, and Cherokee Nation author Traci Sorell completed it after McManis died in 2018. Tu Books, an imprint of Lee & Low Books, published the first edition in 2019. The book joins one family's experience of relocation to larger questions of identity, community, prejudice, and belonging, with historical photographs and notes extending its account beyond the fictional narrative.
