Charles Dana Gibson

Charles Dana Gibson shaped American illustration through pen-and-ink drawings that defined a fashionable social world at the turn of the twentieth century. Charles Dana Gibson, the Man and His Art appeared in 1903 through Collier's Weekly. The surviving title presents the volume as a collection centered on Gibson and adds the subtitle with a brief but entertaining narrative of the two Gibson girls. No separate narrative author is credited, so the safest description is an illustrated Gibson work rather than a separately credited biography. The volume preserves his elegant line work and the social type known as the Gibson Girl, whose posture, dress, and confidence became widely recognizable. Charles Dana Gibson, the Man and His Art therefore captures both an illustrator and the cultural figure most associated with him, using drawings and light narrative to show why Gibson's visual language reached readers beyond specialist art circles.
