About this book
The House in the Water is a book of animal stories by Charles G. D. Roberts. A chapter called The Battle in the Pond opens at breakfast, where the Boy tells Jabe that the noise they heard last night was no windfall, and the woodsman says sarcastically that he knew all the time it was beaver.
An old bear crouches where she is, straining her eyes to make out the form of her little one, who is striving valiantly to claw his way up the perpendicular surface of smooth rock. Sonny, the discarded, the discredited, finds the days on a lonely backwoods farm hopeless, dark and interminable, but to the Kid they are days of wonder, every one. The Kid loves the queer black and white pigs, which he studies intently through the cracks in the boarding of their pen.
