Charles Kent, whose full name was William Charles Mark Kent, combined journalism, poetry, editing, and public reading with a close friendship with Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens as a Reader came from Chapman and Hall in 1872, two years after Dickens died. The study draws on Kent's direct knowledge of the novelist's celebrated performances, along with materials Dickens supplied for the project. Kent follows the preparation, delivery, and dramatic effects of readings that transformed scenes from the novels into staged events. His own work as a lecturer and reader made him attentive to voice, timing, gesture, and audience response, rather than treating these appearances as a minor appendix to the fiction. He also contributed to periodicals and produced poetry and editorial work. The resulting book combines biography, performance history, and testimony from a friend who understood how Dickens adapted written scenes for listeners in crowded halls.
