Charles Reade was a Victorian novelist and dramatist who built fiction from documentary research, theatrical practice, and contemporary social disputes. Masks and faces began as an 1852 comedy written with Tom Taylor and centered on the eighteenth-century actor Peg Woffington; Reade later reshaped its material into the novel Peg Woffington. A Terrible Temptation appeared in 1871 after serialization in Cassell’s Magazine and belongs to the period’s sensation fiction, using contested inheritance, marriage, and concealed identity to drive its plot. The Cloister and the Hearth, first published in expanded form in 1861, is Reade’s major historical novel. It follows Gerard Eliassoen across fifteenth-century Europe and draws on traditions surrounding the parents of Erasmus. Reade’s range across stage comedy, topical fiction, and historical reconstruction makes these three titles useful markers of his career. The surviving editions also show how often his books carried explanatory subtitles, while the collaborative byline of the play preserves Tom Taylor’s equal role in its original form.
