About this book
A Simpleton, by Charles Reade, carries a preface in which the author says he borrows facts from every accessible source and is not a plagiarist. The contents list a preface and chapters numbered from Chapter I onward, each given only by its number. Wyman communicates Dr. Snell's opinion, saying the lungs are not affected, and the liver is congested, but not diseased.
A postscript says, "I say, Cicely, I think I should like to marry you," and Lady Cicely's reply is that she would enjoy it of all things but is too young. A speaker tells "sir" that English fortunes, even the largest, are mere child's play, compared with the colossal wealth a man can accumulate, if he looks beyond these great discoveries to their consequences.
