Hughes Johnson spent a decade at Google running sales and operations teams, then joined Stripe as chief operating officer when it had around two hundred staff and stayed while it passed seven thousand. Scaling People is a manual rather than a memoir, full of the documents she actually used: operating plans, review templates, hiring rubrics. She read English at Brown and began her working life in politics and consulting. She later moved out of the operating role into a corporate officer and adviser post at the same company, which is where the book was written.
