Daina Ramey Berry
A Black Women's History of the United States is a joint book: Daina Ramey Berry wrote it with Kali Nicole Gross, and Beacon Press issued it in 2020 as part of the ReVisioning American History series. It runs from a woman called Isabel de Olvera, who in 1600 petitioned a Spanish colonial official to record that she was free before she would join an expedition north, through to the present, and it prefers particular women to representative ones. Berry is a historian of slavery and of the domestic slave trade; her earlier book The Price for Their Pound of Flesh followed the market values assigned to enslaved people from before birth to after death, including the trade in bodies for dissection. She has held chairs at Texas and at Santa Barbara, where she became dean.
