April Ryan has spent decades reporting from the White House, with an emphasis on civil rights, race, and executive power. Black Women Will Save the World: An Anthem, published by Amistad in 2022, combines memoir, contemporary political commentary, and profiles of Black women in public life. Ryan connects her own experiences in the White House press corps with accounts of leaders and activists including Shirley Chisholm, Maxine Waters, Kamala Harris, and LaTosha Brown. The book examines how Black women have turned pressure from racism and sexism into political organization, cultural leadership, and community protection, while often receiving limited recognition. Ryan began covering the White House during the Clinton administration and has reported across successive presidencies. Her earlier books include The Presidency in Black and White, At Mama's Knee, and Under Fire. Black Women Will Save the World: An Anthem extends that body of work by placing the reporter within the history she describes, joining interviews and public events to a personal argument about leadership and resilience.
