The Doctors Blackwell examines physician sisters Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell across Britain, France, and America. Elizabeth became the first woman in America to receive a medical degree in 1849; Emily developed into the stronger clinician, although public memory often placed her behind her older sister. Nimura traces their disagreements as carefully as their shared achievements, including the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, a hospital staffed entirely by women. W. W. Norton published the dual biography in 2021, and it became a 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist in biography. Drawing closely on letters and journals, Nimura connects the sisters' ambitions to medical training, public health, abolition, and the uneven growth of women's professional opportunity.
