Danesh Rana serves in the Indian Police Service on the Jammu and Kashmir cadre, holding the rank of Additional Director General of Police, and both of his books draw on that ground. Red Maize, brought out by HarperCollins India in 2015, is fiction set in Kashmir through the years of insurgency and what they cost ordinary life there. As Far As The Saffron Fields, subtitled The Pulwama Conspiracy and released in February 2022 on the third anniversary of the event it examines, reconstructs how the convoy blast of 14 February 2019 at Lethpora in Pulwama, which killed forty Central Reserve Police Force personnel, was assembled. Rana wrote it from close knowledge of the investigation and of the ground it covered.
