Daniel Judson
Daniel Judson builds American suspense novels from secrets, divided loyalties, threatened households, and mounting psychological pressure. A recipient of the Shamus Award and a four-time finalist for that honour, he has written novels including The Temporary Agent, The Violet Hour, The Darkest Place, and The Water’s Edge. The Cottage centres on Kate Burke, a widowed teacher living in Westport, Connecticut, with her twelve-year-old twins. After disturbing intrusions unsettle the family home, she rents the small cottage on her property and turns again to her estranged sister for help. Judson gradually makes ordinary relationships harder to trust as the danger becomes more personal. Kirkus praised the novel’s control of suspicion, especially the pressure it places on a protagonist who cannot easily distinguish protection from manipulation. Published in 2021, The Cottage extends Judson’s interest in how earlier loss changes present judgment, using a domestic setting rather than a distant conspiracy to sustain the novel’s unease.
