Chan worked for fourteen years as an attorney drafting environmental and natural-resource legislation for the United States Senate before turning to fiction full time. She continued the setting in The Mill River Redemption and The Promise of Home. The Mill River Recluse established the compassionate ensemble storytelling that defines the sequence, blending mystery, romance, and domestic drama while asking how private acts of generosity or harm can reshape an entire town long after their origins are forgotten.
