David Field builds historical novels from his legal background and an interest in the institutions that shape political power. The Conscience of a King is the seventh and concluding novel in his Medieval Saga. Set in England from 1229, it follows Simon de Montfort as he enters the service of Henry III, marries the king's sister Eleanor, and becomes increasingly troubled by royal government. Field uses Simon's changing relationship with Henry to explore loyalty, reform, faith, and the boundaries of obedience. Sapere Books released the book in 2023, completing a sequence that begins with Conquest and traces English rule across several generations. The Conscience of a King works both as the culmination of that long chronology and as a focused portrait of a nobleman moving from court insider to political opponent.
