David L. Dudley
David L. Dudley is a novelist and literature professor whose fiction places young Black protagonists against defining moments in American history. Caleb’s Wars is a coming-of-age novel set in rural Georgia during the Second World War, when German prisoners are visible locally and segregation governs Caleb's daily choices. Published by Clarion Books in 2011, it follows his growing commitment to justice while conflict with his father and anxiety over his brother's military service test his judgment. Dudley served as a Lutheran minister before joining Georgia Southern University, where he taught literature for thirty years and retired in 2019. His other books include The Bicycle Man, Cy in Chains, and Asher's Eye, extending his interest in moral courage, faith, and historical pressure. Caleb’s Wars connects that larger bibliography to the home front before the modern civil-rights movement, giving readers a situated story about conscience, family authority, racial hierarchy, and the difficult formation of self-respect.
