Bob Carruthers
1960
Bob Carruthers has created illustrated history, documentary programs, and combat fiction as a military historian, author, and producer. Into the Gates of Hell, written with Sinclair McLay and edited by Mark Farr, is a 2013 prequel set during the opening of Operation Barbarossa. It follows von Schroif's assault-gun crew at Brest-Litovsk and was published by Pen and Sword Fiction under the fuller series title Into the Gates of Hell: Stug Command '41. Tiger Command!, also developed with McLay, appeared in 2013 through the Claymore imprint. Its subtitle identifies it as an Eastern Front novel, and its plot follows a German tank unit as bureaucracy, espionage, bombing, and battlefield pressure surround the development of the Tiger tank. Carruthers has written extensively about both world wars and received an Emmy Award for documentary work. In these novels, that historical background supports detailed accounts of machinery and command while the recurring crew gives large military operations a continuous human scale.
