Destiny O. Birdsong
Destiny O. Birdsong works across poetry, fiction, and essays from roots in Louisiana. Nobody’s Magic, published by Grand Central Publishing in 2022, brings together three linked narratives about Black women with albinism living in Shreveport. Suzette, Maple, and Agnes confront different questions of independence, work, family, grief, and intimacy, while their shared city and visible difference connect the book's perspectives. The novel reached the finalist list for the Ernest J. Gaines Award and received the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction. Birdsong's debut poetry collection, Negotiations, was published by Tin House in 2020, and her writing has appeared in journals and publications. She has held fellowships and teaching appointments that support work across poetry and prose. Nobody’s Magic shows her interest in voice and interior life on a larger fictional canvas, presenting three distinct women without reducing any one of them to a single shared trait.
