Diane Carey
Diane Carey built a long career in licensed Star Trek fiction, especially stories shaped by command decisions and starship crews. Fire Ship appeared from Pocket Books in 1998 as the fourth volume in The Captain’s Table crossover and as a Star Trek: Voyager novel. Carey frames the story as Captain Kathryn Janeway’s account at the mysterious Captain’s Table. After a sudden attack separates Janeway from Voyager, the alien privateering vessel Zingara rescues her. She learns the unfamiliar Omian culture, begins with humble shipboard duties, and eventually takes command while trying to protect her new allies from a wider conflict. The captain’s voice links the novel to the crossover’s shared premise while keeping Voyager concerns at its center. Carey’s wider bibliography includes Dreadnought!, Battlestations!, Best Destiny, and other Star Trek novels. Fire Ship is therefore both her work and a numbered multi-author crossover volume, with Janeway serving as its fictional storyteller rather than its author.
