Dianne Day wrote historical mysteries featuring Caroline Fremont Jones, an independent typist who builds a life in early twentieth-century California. The Bohemian Murders is the third Fremont Jones mystery. Doubleday published the first edition in 1997, and Crimeline issued a mass-market edition in 1998. After the San Francisco earthquake, Fremont travels toward Carmel and takes temporary charge of the Point Pinos Lighthouse. A body found near the shore draws her into the artistic community around Carmel-by-the-Sea, where questions of identity, property, and disappearance complicate the case. Day uses the investigation to explore a place becoming known for unconventional artists while continuing Fremont’s evolving relationship with Michael Archer. The series began with The Strange Files of Fremont Jones, which received the Macavity Award for Best First Novel, and continued through stories set against recognizable California events and locations. Day’s combination of period detail, a working woman’s perspective, and sequential character development gives the series a distinct place within American historical crime fiction.
