Trained as a biologist, Donna J. Haraway took her doctorate at Yale in 1972 and spent the following decades pulling apart the stories that science tells about nature. Born in Denver in 1944, she taught at Hawaiʻi and at Johns Hopkins before joining the History of Consciousness department at UC Santa Cruz in 1980, where she is Distinguished Professor Emerita. Her 1985 essay A Cyborg Manifesto and her 1989 study Primate Visions made her a fixture of feminist science studies. Staying With the Trouble, brought out by Duke University Press in 2016, is the late statement of that project. She rejects the term Anthropocene for the present age and proposes instead the Chthulucene, a tentacular epoch in which people, animals, fungi and microbes are bound together and obliged to make kin across species lines. The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation awarded her the Erasmus Prize, worth 150,000 euros, in 2025.
