Doug Peacock combines writing, filmmaking, and wildlife advocacy in books that connect field experience with environmental history. In the Shadow of the Sabertooth examines the first people in North America, Late Pleistocene animals, and rapid climatic change. The narrative draws on Peacock's participation in an archaeological dig near Livingston, Montana, then links ancient adaptation to modern changes affecting whitebark pine and other western ecosystems. The 2013 edition came from CounterPunch and AK Press, and a revision added significant material. Peacock also wrote Grizzly Years and Walking It Off and coauthored The Essential Grizzly with Andrea Peacock. His career has moved among wilderness observation, archaeology, conservation, and personal narrative rather than treating those subjects as separate fields. The sabertooth book is characteristic of that approach: deep-time evidence becomes a way to ask how people and other species respond when familiar habitats change quickly.
