Author: Douglas E. Facey
Lake Champlain and the streams feeding it have been Douglas E. Facey's laboratory for nearly all of a working life. Emeritus Professor of Biology at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont, he studies the ecology and physiology of freshwater fishes, among them several uncommon darters that hang on in the lake's lower tributaries. He took a BS in biology at Maine at Orono, an MS in zoology at Vermont and a PhD in zoology at Georgia. The Diversity of Fishes: Biology, Evolution and Ecology is the standard ichthyology text for senior undergraduates and graduate students, written with Gene S. Helfman, Bruce B. Collette and Brian W. Bowen; Facey is lead author of the third edition, published by Wiley in 2023 and covering taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, biogeography, ecology and behaviour. His own fieldwork has run to Atlantic salmon restoration, American eels and the Lake Champlain basin.
