Olukoya took a first-class microbiology degree in Lagos and a doctorate in molecular genetics at Reading, and published more than eighty scientific papers before founding Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries in 1989. The church began as a prayer group in his sitting room and now runs branches across Nigeria and well beyond it. His books, The Tongue Trap among them, belong to the deliverance tradition, which treats illness, poverty and family trouble as spiritual attack to be broken by aggressive prayer. That framing draws sustained criticism from other Nigerian Christians.
