Drew Hayes

Drew Hayes writes comic fantasy that tests ordinary professional habits against worlds crowded with superheroes, adventurers, and supernatural bureaucracy. The Fangs of Freelance is the fourth Fred, the Vampire Accountant book, published by REUTS Publications in 2017. Fred has created a parahuman clan and accepted work for the Agency, but his assignments range far beyond ledgers: he inventories a haunted castle, visits a dangerous amusement park, negotiates with mages, and confronts an enemy from his past. The linked episodes preserve the series' central joke that Fred remains methodical, polite, and deeply committed to accounting even when surrounded by paranormal danger. They also widen his responsibilities from personal survival to leadership and protection of a chosen community. Kirby Heyborne narrates the Tantor Audio edition, while GraphicAudio later produced a full-cast dramatization. Hayes uses Fred's deliberately unheroic vocation to ask what competence, loyalty, and courage look like when spectacle is unavoidable.
