Solaris is a science fiction novel by the Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, first published in 1961. Kris Kelvin, a psychologist, arrives at a research station that orbits the planet Solaris, which is covered by an ocean that seems to be alive. The crew members are behaving strangely, and Kelvin soon finds out why: the ocean makes visitors out of their memories, and he is confronted with a copy of his dead wife, Harey. The novel examines the limits of human understanding in the face of something truly alien, and it explores love, grief and memory. It has been filmed several times, notably by Andrei Tarkovsky in 1972.
