Dwight Messimer

Dwight Messimer was an Army veteran, former police detective, history professor, and military historian whose books recover the institutional and human conflicts behind early aviation and naval warfare. An Incipient Mutiny examines the revolt of U.S. Army Signal Corps pilots against poor leadership, unsafe equipment, and an organization slow to understand powered flight. Potomac Books issued the 2020 volume as An Incipient Mutiny: The Story of the U.S. Army Signal Corps Pilot Revolt. Messimer follows Army aviation from balloons and the Aeronautical Division through the disputes and court-martial proceedings that preceded creation of the Air Service in 1918. Officers including Hap Arnold, Billy Mitchell, Benjamin Foulois, Arthur Cowan, and Ned Goodier appear not as a tidy lineage of pioneers, but as people navigating favoritism, professional rivalry, and uncertain doctrine.
