E. Raymond Hall advanced North American mammalogy through field research, museum leadership, and broad studies of animal distribution. Educated at the University of Kansas and the University of California, Berkeley, he studied with naturalist Joseph Grinnell and later directed the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History. Seventeen Species of Bats Recorded from Barro Colorado Island, Panama Canal Zone was published in 1953 with William B. Jackson in the University of Kansas museum series. The paper updated the island’s bat record through fieldwork conducted in April 1952, using observations and specimens to distinguish the species encountered. Its compact format reflects Hall’s taxonomic practice: precise locality, identifying characters, measurements, and comparison with earlier reports. Smithsonian biographical records also note his work as curator, department chair, and director of the Kansas Biological Survey.
