Edeet Ravel is an Israeli-Canadian novelist whose fiction for varied age groups often examines identity, conflict, memory, and moral uncertainty. Held is a psychological novel for teenage readers about Chloe, a teenager kidnapped while working in Greece and confined by people seeking the release of prisoners. The narrative alternates Chloe’s retrospective account with messages, reports, and other documents, allowing competing versions of her captivity to challenge one another. Annick Press issued Held, and the American Library Association later selected it for its Popular Paperbacks list for teenage readers. Ravel was born on a kibbutz near Israel’s Lebanese border, grew up in Montreal, and pursued advanced study in English literature, Jewish studies, and creative writing. She taught literature and writing before establishing a varied publishing career. Her earlier Tel Aviv trilogy includes Ten Thousand Lovers, Look for Me, and A Wall of Light, books recognized by Canadian literary awards. Held extends her interest in political conflict through an intimate, deliberately unsettled account of fear, attachment, and disputed truth.
