Andrea Bartz
Magazine journalism came before the thrillers for Andrea Bartz, with editorial jobs at Glamour, Self and Psychology Today and bylines in Vogue. The Lost Night, her 2019 debut, sends a woman back through the Brooklyn loft-party scene of 2009 to reopen a friend's death, territory Bartz had lived in herself. The Herd (2020) is set inside an exclusive women-only workspace in the same city, where the founder vanishes days before a major announcement. We Were Never Here (2021) strands two friends on their annual backpacking trip when a night in Chile goes badly wrong; it was a Reese's Book Club pick, an American bestseller, and was optioned by Netflix. Bartz grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and lives in Brooklyn. Her sister, Julia Bartz, also writes thrillers. In August 2024 she became a lead plaintiff in a class action against the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic over pirated books used in training data, a case settled in September 2025 for 1.5 billion dollars.
