Karen Thompson Walker
1980
Karen Thompson Walker examines ordinary communities altered by impossible events. The Dreamers, published by Random House in 2019, centres on a California college town where a spreading condition leaves people in prolonged sleep and intensifies their dreams. Her earlier novel, The Age of Miracles, imagines daily life after Earth’s rotation begins to slow. Walker’s third novel, The Strange Case of Jane O., turns toward memory and perception. Before publishing fiction, she worked in journalism and book editing, and she later taught creative writing. Across the novels, speculative premises remain closely tied to families, institutions and the practical choices people make when familiar rules stop working.
