Edward Jenkins combined work as a British lawyer, social reformer, satirist, and Liberal member of Parliament, and his fiction often challenged public complacency. Ginx’s Baby, first published anonymously in 1870 with the fuller subtitle His Birth and Other Misfortunes, made him widely known. The satire follows a child born into poverty who becomes an object of competition among religious, charitable, and political institutions. Its comedy serves a pointed argument about education, welfare, and the treatment of poor families. Jenkins had studied in Canada and the United States before being called to the English bar. Work for the Aborigines Protection Society took him to British Guiana, where his advocacy for indentured laborers informed The Coolie: His Rights and Wrongs. He later represented Dundee in Parliament and wrote further political satires, including Lord Bantam and Little Hodge. Ginx’s Baby remains the clearest meeting point between his reform campaigns and his gift for compact, argumentative fiction.
