Elias Lönnrot

Elias Lonnrot (1802-1884) was a Finnish physician, philologist, and folklorist who collected oral poetry across Karelia and Finland. By weaving those songs together he created the Kalevala, a work central to Finnish national identity and the modern Finnish language. He also compiled dictionaries and folk-song collections.
