The Iliad
Homer’s great epic opens in the tenth year of the Greek siege of Troy, when a bitter quarrel between Achilles, the finest warrior in the Greek army, and King Agamemnon sets tragedy in motion. Achilles withdraws in fury, and the battle turns against his countrymen as the gods take sides and heroes fall. Across its books the poem gives us Hector’s farewell to his wife, the death of Patroclus, and Achilles’ terrible grief and revenge, building to a final scene of unexpected mercy. More than a war story, it is a meditation on rage, honor, mortality, and the cost of glory that has shaped Western literature for nearly three thousand years.
