Elise Garibaldi
Elise Garibaldi transformed her grandparents' wartime history into a family memoir. Roses in a Forbidden Garden tells how Inge Katz and Sam Berger met as teenagers in Theresienstadt, were separated, survived imprisonment, reunited after the war, and built a life together in New York. Garibaldi grew up hearing their story and later connected the Berger family's history with major testimony archives. The personal narrative centers on Inge Katz within Holocaust history. Appearing initially in 2016, the volume combines family memory with historical reconstruction rather than presenting its central relationship as fiction. Garibaldi later extended the Katz family history in Never Enough and adapted Roses in a Forbidden Garden for educational and theatrical settings. Her work preserves specific lives, voices, and choices against the pressure of wartime persecution, joining close family knowledge with documentary history and public remembrance.
