Elise Primavera
Elise Primavera creates illustrated stories that combine comic invention with emotionally perceptive accounts of friendship and growing up. This American author and artist began publishing illustration work in the early 1980s and later created the Auntie Claus picture books, a holiday series known for its elaborate visual world. Her longer fiction includes The Secret Order of the Gumm Street Girls, a HarperCollins fantasy that follows four mismatched neighbors into an Oz-inspired adventure and features Primavera’s own black-and-white illustrations. She also wrote and illustrated the Ms. Rapscott’s Girls novels, about students at an unusual school for daughters of very busy parents. Making Mistakes on Purpose continues that series, placing the girls under the instruction of a teacher who treats errors as part of learning. Across picture books and novels, Primavera often lets eccentric settings reveal practical lessons about confidence, cooperation, and individual talent. Her work therefore joins the roles of storyteller and visual artist rather than treating illustration as a separate accompaniment.
