Elizabeth Baxter
Elizabeth Baxter is an English fantasy writer whose fiction builds conflicts around magic, loyalty, and contested political power. The Last Priestess begins the Songmaker trilogy, followed by The King's Mage and The Traitor's Song. Its story joins Maegwin, a priestess condemned by the crown, with Rovann, a royal mage charged with uncovering rebellion in the kingdom of Amaury. Their duties initially pull them toward different loyalties, but the threat posed by the Songmaker forces an uneasy alliance. Baxter develops the trilogy through a system of rival magical powers and through characters whose private losses shape public decisions. The first novel was initially published in 2013 and has appeared in later editions as the opening volume of the sequence. Baxter’s broader bibliography also includes the Wrath of the Northmen trilogy. The Last Priestess establishes the concerns that organize the Songmaker books: fractured allegiance, moral uncertainty, and the cost of serving institutions that may not deserve unquestioned obedience.
