Elizabeth Geoghegan is an American fiction writer and essayist based in Rome. Her work has appeared in The Paris Review, TIME, BOMB, Words Without Borders, and travel-writing collections, while her books include Natural Disasters and the memoir The Marco Chronicles. Her 2019 collection eightball gathers eight stories written over more than a decade. Geoghegan has explained that the title refers both to the collection’s eight pieces and to characters who feel trapped behind circumstances they may not escape. The final, longest story supplies the book’s name, while “Tree Boy” opens the sequence and establishes its attention to rhythm, place, loss, and uneasy relationships. Published by Santa Fe Writers Project, the collection reflects Geoghegan’s experience writing between American and Italian settings.
